Business Cards are a fantastic way to convert potential clients into regular clients. But to do that they first need to stand out of the competition. Marketing is nothing without its first step… Attention!
So the number one rule for grabbing attention is: Be Different! I don’t need to stress that it also applies to business cards.
The best way to find out what will make your card stand out is to try a little experiment. Collect all business cards you can lay your hands on (especially from your competition) and when you have a nice bunch, spread them on the floor. Close your eyes for a second, try not to fall asleep, and when you open them again, look which cards grab your attention.
There is a very big chance that most of the collected business cards are simple white templates with a small logo in the corner. Did you notice any of them? Maybe your own?
NEVER use regular business card templates! It’s the cheapest, easiest and surely the fastest way to NOT get noticed.
You can’t see a difference between twins unless you know them very well or look very closely (a birthmark here, a scar there). Same with business card templates. You have to look at them closely, read what’s on them, try to figure out what’s on the tiny logo.
Business cards that probably did grab your attention are custom business cards with a few colors on them. Especially noticeable are cards with red or black backgrounds (although black is a tone, not a color).

Including a picture of your product would grab your future customer’s attention by visually standing out of the white cards, plus giving them a small preview of the product and in this way adding extra interest. With this trick you will definitely be two steps ahead of your competition as you will have two marketing key points, attention and interest, already covered. If the picture is especially good it will probably create desire and all you will need to add to get an order is a great offer and contact information.
If you have a consulting business then a photo of the consultant(who is the “product” you’re offering) accomplishes even more as it will not only be noticeable between all those white business card templates, but will also create a familiarity with the person, some kind of connection through a face. Of course using a photo is not in any way limited to consultancy firms. A photo can be used literally on any business card as it’s the owner of the card that the clients will deal later with and the more they feel at ease with the person, the more they trust him/her and the better the deals will be.
To sum up:
1.Never use business card templates, they do more harm than good
2.Use full color printing. We live in the 21st century, it’s not like it’s expensive anymore.
3.Use both sides to stand out even more.
4.Put a nice picture of your product on it or use a photo of the card owner as it builds trust.
