If you're in the business of making money, it's critical to have business cards on you at all times. However, if you're just getting started in business, or are a freelancer or contractors on a budget, custom-printed business cards may be a luxury that's too expensive at this stage. One option that is available to anyone with a computer and printer is to learn how to design their own business cards, and use those until the funds come up to have a logo and business card professionally designed.

Making business cards on your home computer is relatively simple. The first thing you'll need is business card stock, which will be available at your local stationery store or office supplies store. Choose a card stock that can be fed through the type of printer that you own to ensure you're not making a trip back to get the right materials. Almost all of these different card stocks available will come with either a template number that can then be used in Microsoft Word to create the cards, or a custom software CD that will include software that will allow you to design the cards. With these items, you can make business cards very easily.

As with anything, it's best to keep these cards simple as they aren't professionally printed. Utilize a black, clear, easy to read font such as Arial or Times to allow your cards to be easily read. They're no substitute for professionally designed cards, but they'll do until you're ready to upgrade.
